Science / project plan

Our team comprises microbiologists, molecular ecologists, geochemists, and modellers from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (Potsdam, Germany), Queen Mary University (London, the UK) and the Department of Environmental Science, Aarhus University (Roskilde, Denmark). We all study cryospheric environments and the processes linked to how snow and ice microbes in general, and pigmented algae in particular, affect nutrient and carbon cycling as well as albedo in polar settings.

We will be based at Sermilik Research Station (South East Greenland) and will be working on Mittivakkat Glacier to collect aerosol, snow surface, ice and algal samples. On June 22nd we will take a helicopter out into the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE/REFREEZE TAS A weather station) for additional sampling.
